Hierarchy Revived
A new backrest with an integrated handle and a new seat were designed as simple rectangular shapes in CAD and prepared as DXF files, along with spacers. The parts were fabricated by an online laser-cutting service from 5.4 mm clear cast acrylic and fastened using stainless steel bolts, oversized washers, and square nuts.
To install the backrest, the existing top holes were extended and two additional bottom holes were added. The seat was fastened using acrylic clamps to preserve the original material and minimize drilling.
Bolting the backrest altered the chair’s structural behavior, resulting in increased rigidity. The new seat sits lower than the original foam seat, shifting the seating position and changing the relationship between seat and backrest.
The textile and foam seat and backrest were removed. The plastic U-profile seat attachment was also removed. This part allowed the seat to lift and included the original tag, but it would appear visually intrusive beneath the acrylic. Since the chair did not include an under-seat bag, the lifting function was no longer necessary.
The wheels were removed, cleaned, rust brushed off, steel parts treated with beeswax, and reassembled. The bent wheel holders were left unchanged, as they point to the chair’s use.
