Only the legs were sanded and painted. The remaining wooden parts were covered by upholstery and left unfinished. The sides of the armrests were covered with cardboard. Zig-zag springs were stapled to the frame. In some cases, staples were placed too close to the edge of the wood, causing splitting and spring failure. The top rail of one backrest was broken, causing it to sag. Staples, glue, and screws were used throughout to maximize assembly speed. The upholstery was sewn as a single piece, pulled over the frame, and fastened in place.

Despite their mass production, differences between the chairs remain visible: small variations in dimensions and attention to detail. Yet the highly specialized nature of the process obscures individual makers. The chairs reveal little about the people who built them. Instead, they reveal the logic of their engineering.
